Founded by Mafia Island higher learning graduates and students, MIHLGSO exists to develop educated, disciplined, and cooperative indigenous Mafians — in collaboration with everyone who shares this mission.

Who we are
A community organization rooted in Mafia Island
MIHLGSO brings together higher-learning graduates, students, and ordinary residents of Mafia Island around one shared commitment: that the people of Mafia should lead the development of Mafia. We are volunteers and members first — neighbours who decided to organize rather than wait.
We work alongside the Government of Tanzania, local leaders, and partners who share our mission, channeling education, welfare, and community projects toward the people who need them most: the poor, orphans, widows, and the vulnerable.
What drives us
The principles we were built on
Four principles, written into our founding resolution, guide every decision we make.
Freedom
Every member and beneficiary participates by choice, with dignity, and with a voice in how we grow.
Justice
We direct help fairly toward those most in need, without favour and without discrimination.
Fraternity
We act as one family of Mafians — supporting one another and the wider community as kin.
Concord
We build through agreement and cooperation with the Government, partners, and the people of Mafia.

Where we work
Mafia Island and beyond
Mafia Island sits off the southern coast of Tanzania, a community rich in natural resources yet facing real gaps in education, welfare, and opportunity. Our head office is on the island, close to the people we serve.
While Mafia Island is our home and focus, our registration covers the United Republic of Tanzania, allowing us to partner and operate wherever our mission can do the most good.

Why we exist
Helping the poor, vulnerable, uneducated, those affected by AIDS, orphans, and widows is not optional — it is necessary. Mafia, as part of the United Republic of Tanzania, calls for development driven by the natural resources around the island. We, the graduates and students of higher learning together with the people of Mafia, resolved to build this organization on the principles of freedom, justice, fraternity, and concord — to help the Government develop Mafia Island economically, socially, and educationally.
